A free chair-based exercise group meeting at Wellspring in Cheadle has grown to around 15 participants, sometimes reaching 20, since launching 8 months ago.
The classes run every Wednesday from 11:45 am to 12:30 pm. Exercise instructor Sheila from My Active leads the sessions, which are designed for older adults, people with limited mobility, and those recovering from injury. The activity builds strength, flexibility, and balance without heavy joint strain.
How the Group Started
Minister Julie Hassall explained that people from other community groups had expressed interest in chair-based exercise but found the leisure centre too distant. Wellspring offered to host the classes on condition they remained free.
"Because they didn't need to pay for the venue, the only cost was for Sheila to run it," Hassall said. The church remains committed to keeping the event free where there is genuine community engagement.
Growing Community
Participants come from various backgrounds, including the Friday group and chapel members. Some attend for the gentle exercise, while others value the company and social connection. Several have begun going out for lunch together following the sessions.
Wellspring's accessible building, with flat access and accessible toilets, has been key to the group's success. The venue can accommodate between 30 and 40 people. Minister Hassall encouraged more residents to attend the weekly Wednesday sessions.
Cheadle Mayor Phil Routledge visited the group and participated in a class. Wellspring has development plans in progress and fundraising underway.
